Worth a small correction first: the Microsoft device most people have in mind here was branded Surface Duo, part of the Surface product family — not “Microsoft Duo.” The shorthand is understandable, and the branding echo it points to is exactly what tech commentators flagged the moment Apple's chosen name leaked, hours ahead of the keynote.

On timeline: the original Surface Duo launched September 10, 2020, and Microsoft ended its software support in September 2023. A successor, Surface Duo 2, launched in September 2021 and was discontinued in October 2024. By the time iPhone Duo arrived, the Surface Duo name had already been off the market for roughly two years.

Complicating a simple “Apple copied Microsoft” reading, Apple used the word “Duo” long before Microsoft did. The PowerBook Duo, a line of subcompact laptops, sold from 1992 to 1999 — 28 years ahead of Surface Duo — and Apple more recently sold a modestly-reviewed MagSafe Duo charger. On naming history alone, Apple arguably has as much claim to the word as Microsoft does.

The overlap also appears to be branding-only rather than conceptual. Microsoft's Surface Duo was a true dual-screen device — two separate 5.6-inch physical displays joined by a hinge, with a visible seam between them, running Android. iPhone Duo instead uses a single continuous, flexible OLED panel that folds, the same basic display approach Samsung, Huawei, Honor, and Google all now use. So while the shared name invites exactly the comparison it is being asked about here, the underlying hardware concept it points to is not the one Surface Duo represented.

It is still worth stating plainly, as a branding-optics matter distinct from the hardware: Apple's choice of name for its first-ever foldable is one a rival already used and retired in a broadly similar “phone that becomes something bigger” category — even granting that Surface Duo's commercial failure is generally attributed to underpowered hardware and unfinished software for its era, not to the name itself.

Its closest match by size is, somewhat surprisingly, Samsung's own newest addition: the Galaxy Z Fold 8's “Wide” variant, introduced alongside the more traditional, tall-and-narrow Fold 8 Ultra, comes in at a nearly identical 7.6-inch inner and 5.5-inch cover display. Every other device on this list — Pixel 11 Pro Fold, Huawei Mate X7, Honor Magic V6 — has converged on a noticeably larger ~8.0-inch inner panel paired with a ~6.4-to-6.5-inch cover screen, chasing more of a “phone that becomes a small tablet” experience.

Read strategically, Apple and Samsung's new Wide variant represent one design philosophy — a shorter, wider, still-pocketable foldable — while Google, Huawei, and Honor represent another, maximizing inner canvas at the cost of a larger, less phone-like cover screen. Conclusion
